Ecosystems

An ecosystem defines one artifact format, its configuration, client commands, and support matrix. Each [[index]] selects an ecosystem by ID. One process can activate several ecosystems through separate indexes; a virtual index combines indexes from one ecosystem.

Use the owner pages for setup and protocol reference:

The activation contract defines selection, startup behavior, and unsupported features.

  • Ecosystem activation

How configuration selects artifact formats and how startup reports unsupported behavior.

  • PyPI

How PyPI maps to cached, hosted, and virtual indexes, the Simple API, and pip, uv, and twine configuration.

  • OCI

OCI index roles, the /v2/ distribution protocol, and client configuration.
